To start your driving lessons...
The first thing to do before starting driving lessons is to apply for, and pass, your Driver Theory Test. You can get a list of all the possible questions in the Official Driving Theory Test book or CD-Rom This is available from any good bookshop. To apply for the theory test you need to contact Driver Theory Testing Services.
Please note that applications require your PPS number, and you will also need your credit card if you want to apply online or book over the phone.
If you don't want to book with a credit card, call the number above and ask them to post you an application form. Then you can then pay by cheque or postal order.
Once you have passed your theory test you can apply for your Learner’s Permit. It is an offence to drive on a public road without your licence or learner permit on your person. You should make the application to your local Motor Taxation Office. You can get the application form from your local Garda station or library or motor taxation office. This form is not available to download because if contains a sticky label to apply your signature to your licence.
For your local Motor Taxation Office check out:
Your application should include your theory test pass certificate, the fee (€15), the completed application form and an eyesight report (Form D502) from your GP or your optician, and a medical report (Form D501) (if applicable). If you are downloading the Medical report form it must be printed back to back.
If you would like some further information regarding this please see the RSA Website section on driving licences for very detailed information.
Once you have received your learner’s permit or if you already have one, contact us using the details at the end of this page or fill out the booking request form and we’ll call you back.
EDT is a course of twelve lessons that must be completed before sitting a driving test. They are designed to help you prepare for the practical driving test, cover some of the most important skills and behaviours (driving habits) that a learner driver must have, guide your progress, and highlight the contribution the Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) and Sponsor (person who accompanies you while you’re practising) make to this process. The first eight lessons must be done in order and the last four can be done in any order.
EDT is a very intense course and should be spread out over time so that practice on each topic is completed before moving on to the next topic. The RSA recommend that you leave a two week gap between each EDT lesson and that the course is completed over a minimum period of six months. This is to enable practice of each EDT lesson and to prepare for your next EDT lesson. The practice should be done with a ‘sponsor’ or with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) or a mixture of both.
More information regarding EDT is available from the RSA here or on my website here.
At DRIVE SCHOOL Ireland we are experts in training you in EDT. If you would like to arrange your EDT or you would like to ask any questions about it don’t hesitate to contact us by using the booking request form, emailing us or calling us at the number below.
Once you feel your driving is up to a competent standard it's time to apply for your Road Safety Authority Driving Test. You must have held your Learner Permit for a minimum of six months.
